Janis Ian – Tea & Sympathy

janis ian as she looks these days

Sometimes – I wrote a post a while back about how sometimes songs pop into your head and you have to work out why – well I haven’t worked this one out yet!

But I have been humming this one all week, and the only thing I could remember was the first line – so I decided I had to look it up – I didn’t even remember it was called ‘Tea & Sympathy’, or that it was so suicidal – but then it was written by the Janis Ian who wrote ‘At Seventeen’, and yes, I still have the album, on vinyl, Between the Lines, from 1975 altho, for all these oldies but goodies, I no longer have a record player – so I couldn’t just put it on!

I had to look up what the song was on her website http://www.janisian.com/ – and then find it on u-tube to listen to it.

I have to say its still a beautiful song with a lovely melody, and her voice was full of nuance.

I wasn’t even sure if she was still going, but it seems she is going strong, and has been singing with another real favourite of mine, Tom Paxton, recently.  There are still some dates this year if you want to check her website – I would love to see them both, but all the gigs are in the USA – a bit far away for me in Wales – smile.  I did find something from their performance to listen to, its a bit different!

The Last Thing on My MindI really am wallowing in nostalgia!

So back to Tea & Sympathy …

Its really strange to be able to jump 40 years back, and still love what I loved then – no – I’m not feeling suicidal – and I never was when I used to play this all those years ago – but I think I am looking forward to some changes in my life – that I’m planning, but that haven’t yet come to fruition, and, maybe that’s why …..

“I don’t want to ride the milk train any more”

…… is resonating with me so strongly just now!

Tea And Sympathy

Janis Ian

I don’t want to ride the milk train any more
I’ll go to bed at nine, and waken with the dawn
and lunch at half past noon
Dinner prompt at five
The comfort of a few old friends long past their prime

Pass the tea & sympathy
for the good old days long gone
Let’s drink a toast to those who most
believe in what they’ve won
It’s a long long time ’til morning
plays wasted on the dawn
I’ll not write another line,
for my true love is gone

And when the guests have done
I’ll tidy up the room
I’ll turn the covers down
and gazing at the moon
will pray to go quite mad
and live in long ago
when you and I were one, so very long ago

Pass the tea & sympathy
for the good old days long gone
Let’s drink a toast to those who most
believe in what they’ve won
It’s a long long time ’til morning
plays wasted on the dawn
I’ll not write another line,
for my true love is gone

And when I have no dreams
to give you any more,
I’ll light a blazing fire
and wait within the door,
and throw my life away
“I wonder why?” they all will say
And now I lay me down to sleep,
forever and a day

Pass the tea & sympathy
for the good old days are dead
Let’s drink a toast to those who best
survived the life they’ve led
It’s a long long time ’til morning,
so build your fires high
Now I lay me down to sleep,
forever by your side
